CREATIVE DIRECTOR, STYLIST & DESIGNER

Ara Nuri Steel is a Gadigal (Sydney) based award winning creative director, stylist and production designer with a bachelor of fine arts degree in design for performance from NIDA. She is also the co-founder of ARACOURT, an independent film studio. And recently nominated for the APDG award for Production Design or Costume Design for Short Film, Music Video or Web Series 2024, for her co-design of the short film Luna & The Brain Tuna.

My passion for design and making likely stems from my upbringing with two artist parents in Canberra and my Steiner education, which nurtured my creativity. Over six years at Canberra Youth Theatre, I collaborated with The National Library of Australia, The National Gallery of Australia, and Floriade, developing a love for site-specific and immersive theatre.

I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design for Performance from the NIDA in Sydney, where I honed my skills in creating costumes, props, sets, and locations for film and theatre. Highlights included exhibiting a large-scale model at the 2015 Prague Quadrennial and collaborating with Pittsburgh's Quantum Theatre on Peribanez. My NIDA experience also involved designing costumes, sets, and puppets for productions like Dot and the Kangaroo and contributing to the films Lobster Paradise and music videos for Polish Club and Daniel Trakell.

Since graduating in 2016, I've worked as an Art Department Assistant on Marvel’s Shang-Chi, on films like NITRAM and SISSY, and as a Designer on AFTRS projects, corporate commercials, and music videos. Now based in Sydney as a freelance designer, I've co-founded the film studio ARACOURT with fellow designer Courtney Westbrook, focusing on collaborative projects.

TESTIMONIALS

I recently worked with Ara who was Head Art Director on our team filming Deadly Women season 13 for Discovery Channel. As DOP I found her attention to detail quite amazing, she is also very hard-working, diligent, and more than willing to collaborate with all departments. Her nature is earthy and gentle but also a strong leader in her role as Art Director. It was a pleasure to work with her, and I look forward to doing so again in the future. I would highly recommend Ara for any position in the Art Dept.
— Geoffrey Thomas, Cinematographer,
Ara is an extremely eclectic, open-minded creative who brings the most unique and keen eye to their work. Ara possesses strong artistic ideas and thoughts backed up with attention to detail, promptness and a willingness to speak up for ideas they believe will suit the best image for the production.
— Jake Brennan, Producer & Managing Partner of Powerhouse Pictures
She was an excellent collaborator; always working towards the vision for the film but willing to make bold creative choices. On set, she was both professional and efficient. Despite our days being incredibly long and in extreme conditions, it felt like she never faltered. I would absolutely work with her again.
— Ven Gia, Director/Producer
Ara is an absolute pleasure to work with, talented, handy, creative and resourceful. Highly recommend her for projects big or small!
— Maren Smith, Film & Broadcast Producer
I have now worked with Ara on three different projects. Each project has been vastly different from the next yet Ara is able to adapt to each challenge effortlessly. She is a designer who is highly creative, and resourceful and has a strong dramaturgical eye. As a result, her design choices are imaginative and unique. Ara is also an absolute joy to have as part of a team and an extremely hard worker. She is able to communicate and work well with all areas involved in a project. I’d highly recommend Ara to work on any creative project, she is a rare find!
— Jessica Arthur, Director,
I found her to be a pleasure to work with. She’s dedicated, personable, professional and in the possession of a keen eye for detail and impeccable taste. With limited resources she demonstrated great resourcefulness delivering a design on time, to budget, and to a standard that outpaced even the most optimistic expectations for the production.
— David Burrowes Writer/Director

Quantum’s style of working environmentally is challenging, requiring many people’s labour to make a site workable, such as this one for ‘Peribanez’ in Mellon Park’s Jennie King Rose Garden. Ara lent herself tirelessly and uncomplainingly to that effort. She excelled in supporting the work of the artistic team as they wrestled with questions both artistic and practical. It was excellent to have her fresh perspective. ... She’s curious, she asked questions. She was clearly thoughtful, reliable, always prompt, and eager to collaborate, and her skills with carpentry, textiles, construction and design are sold and varied.
— Karla Boos, Artistic Director at Quantum Theatre, Pittsburgh, USA
