CREATIVE DIRECTOR, STYLIST & DESIGNER
Ara Nuri Steel is a Gadigal (Sydney) based award winning creative director, stylist and production designer with a bachelor of fine arts degree in design for performance from NIDA. She is also the co-founder of ARACOURT, an independent film studio. And recently nominated for the APDG award for Production Design or Costume Design for Short Film, Music Video or Web Series 2024, for her co-design of the short film Luna & The Brain Tuna.
My passion for design and making likely stems from my upbringing with two artist parents in Canberra and my Steiner education, which nurtured my creativity. Over six years at Canberra Youth Theatre, I collaborated with The National Library of Australia, The National Gallery of Australia, and Floriade, developing a love for site-specific and immersive theatre.
I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design for Performance from the NIDA in Sydney, where I honed my skills in creating costumes, props, sets, and locations for film and theatre. Highlights included exhibiting a large-scale model at the 2015 Prague Quadrennial and collaborating with Pittsburgh's Quantum Theatre on Peribanez. My NIDA experience also involved designing costumes, sets, and puppets for productions like Dot and the Kangaroo and contributing to the films Lobster Paradise and music videos for Polish Club and Daniel Trakell.
Since graduating in 2016, I've worked as an Art Department Assistant on Marvel’s Shang-Chi, on films like NITRAM and SISSY, and as a Designer on AFTRS projects, corporate commercials, and music videos. Now based in Sydney as a freelance designer, I've co-founded the film studio ARACOURT with fellow designer Courtney Westbrook, focusing on collaborative projects.
