Magic Flute

Theatre production for NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF DRAMATIC ARTS (NIDA)

This exploration into the text and music of the opera, we imagined a world of sun and moon, of gold and silver, of desert and deep sea. The Queen of the Night and her followers exist in the realms of the oceans, ruled by the moon, fluid and unpredictable, Sarastro and his people exist in the confines of structure and order, hot and rigid. Visually the design sought to manipulate the space of the theatre into a battle between these opposing elements and have them clash onstage in an eruption of colour and light.

Composition: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Libretto: Emanuel Schikaneder
Director: Clemence Williams
Production & Costume Design: Ara Nuri Steel
